Once upon a time.....

After long and arduous thinking of my past experiences and what others would find intriguing, I came up with five opening lines to essays that I could write about. These were the winners:

1. The view out the window was pleasant and then the door to the plane opened.

2. I don't like to lie.

3. My wife's doctor told her to push but I didn't know I should too.

4. Sitting across the room from me, Bill Cosby asked if I knew what a cappuccino was.

5. With my hands tied behind my back, blood streaming from my chin, and a knife lying close by, my mother walked into the room.

I hope you enjoy delving into the possibilities and letting your mind wander into imaginary worlds.

And the winners are.......

Five opening lines that I find interesting from my Essay readings are:

1. One is in a hurry to leave, but one’s visitor keeps chattering away.

From Hateful Things p. 24

2. To the extent that useful thoughts are fuller and more solid, they are also more absorbing and more burdensome.

From On some verses of Virgil p. 58

3. There is a spider crawling along the matted floor of the room where I sit (not the one which has been so well allegorized in the admirable Lines to a Spider, but another of the same edifying breed); he runs with heedless, hurried hasted, he hobbles awkwardly towards me, he stops—he sees the giant shadow before him, and, at a loss whether to retreat or proceed, meditates his huge foe—but as I do not start up and seize upon the straggling caitiff, as he would upon a hapless fly within his toils, he takes heart, and ventures on with mingled cunning, impudence, and fear.

From On the Pleasure of Hating p. 189

4. Every age has a keyhole to which its eye is pasted.

From My Confession p. 555

5. I have no ear.

From A Chapter on Ears p. 165

Not fictious titles but titles that are fictious

1. Ring of Desire

2. Rocks for my dog

3. Broccoli at 30,000 feet

4. Circle Squared

5. Of dice and men

On Writing

First of all, this blog is not about Stephen King's book under the same title. It is an excellent piece of work and would be quite fitting for this assignment. It essentially is an essay about...you guessed it; writing.

When talking about my writing, I would have to say I enjoy it most of the time. It is precisely at times like this when it is more enjoyable. You can be free to let yourself spill onto the paper. Like Christi said, who else knows us better than ourselves? Another time when I enjoy writing is when I'm writing fiction. I let my imagination wander along unknown paths and I get to come along, visit, and write about what I encounter. I rarely know where I'll end up which is part of the fun. I haven't been to many exotic places yet, but I've met countless characters that are endearing to me. I'm always sad to have to leave them but life is not static nor should I be.

Writing is a passion for me. That's one of the reasons I chose English as a major; to help me develop a better understanding of and become more competent at it. Passion motivates us in ways that only we can understand. We just know that we must listen to that voice that whispers to us saying," Write."
